"You Called Yourself A Friend"
by David Kraine

You would not gossip,
And so it was you who was sneered.
You would not back stab,
And so it was your back which took our cuts.
You would not mold for us,
And so we chiseled.
And when we were finished,
You,
tattered and broken,
I saw that the person I once knew was gone.

You called yourself a friend,
And we did too.

(appearing in the Winter 2009 Juggler)

In a future overrun by humans breaking the very rules which make them human: one boy is forced to leave the planet he calls home, one man struggles against the iron-fisted Democratic Assembly, and all are forced to see through the eyes of their own enemies. But who is the real enemy, and how do you stop (or protect) something that's overcome every force that's dared to defy it... the human race... the Plague.

The Admiral of the Democratic Assembly's Royal Fleet.
A Captain who's seen it all.
A boy who never fit in with his own kind.
A Defiled rebel working to destroy the Assembly.
A Magi running from everything:

Different perspectives trace the story of change in a Universe that hasn't seen it for in a long, long time.
